Secondment worker visa

The secondment worker visa lets overseas employees come to the UK as part of high-value contracts or investments between their employer and a UK business. We advise on applications, sponsorship, and compliance with Home Office rules.

Global mobility routes

The secondment worker visa is part of the global business mobility route. It allows staff employed overseas to work temporarily in the UK under arrangements such as major contracts or joint ventures with a UK company.

It is particularly used in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, energy, and technology, where international collaboration and specialist expertise are essential.

Following the HC 1333 reforms, sponsors must comply with the new Part Suitability framework and enhanced compliance inspection standards introduced for 2026.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be employed by an overseas business with a high-value contract or investment in place with a UK sponsor.
  • Have a certificate of sponsorship (CoS) from the UK business.
  • Have worked for the overseas employer for at least 12 months (with limited exceptions).
  • Have sufficient funds to support themselves unless exempt.
  • Meet any updated suitability and compliance criteria under HC 1333.
  • Meet the new B2 English language requirement if applying from 8 January 2026 onwards (where applicable).

Application process

  • Step 1 – Sponsorship: The UK business must hold a valid sponsor licence and issue a CoS.

  • Step 2 – Visa application: Apply online, pay the visa fee and immigration health surcharge, and provide supporting documents.

  • Step 3 – Decision: Most applications are processed within three weeks if made from outside the UK.

Length of stay

This visa is usually granted for up to 12 months and can be extended for a maximum of 24 months.

Settlement

The secondment worker visa does not lead directly to settlement. Applicants may switch into other visa categories, such as skilled worker, that can lead to indefinite leave to remain.
